New ways to find journal articles

March 31, 2006

Two of our main full-text journals packages, Academic Search Elite and Business Source Elite are now offering new ways to search. As well as the traditional ‘think of a keyword and type it in the box’ method there is now a visual search facility. Log in to either of the databases (Athens passwords needed) and you’ll see a range of ways to search, displayed on tabs at the top of the screen. We often recommend the advanced search for maximum control of your results, and now there is a new option: visual search. Click on the tab to load the page (it requires Java, so you may need to download this the first time you use it- just follow the instructions). Type a keyword into the box and click on search. Results are presented as a visual map of circles and squares, guiding you through different topics and suggesting related keywords. Abstracts and full-text links can be seen by clicking on the squares. Students who have seen this method of searching so far have been really impressed with their results, finding the visual search easy to use. To quote one student “It’s great. I don’t think in straight lines!’ Highly recommended.
